Transportation Division

What We Do

The Transportation Division represents the public in matters brought before the Utilities Commission involving regulated motor carriers of household goods as well as privately owned and operated ferry boat and bus services. Carriers that transport household goods for compensation over the public highways within North Carolina fall under the Utilities Commission's jurisdiction. Ferry boats and certain bus services must file and maintain the rates and terms of service for their operations.

In addition, the Division conducts audits of household goods carriers to ensure proper use of forms and compliance with provisions in the Maximum Rate Tariff that governs the transportation of household goods within the State. The Division also conducts training seminars for household goods carriers.

The Transportation Division can be reached at 919-733-7766 or Click here to email.

Complaints

The Transportation Division investigates complaints regarding the transportation of household goods by both certified and uncertified household goods carriers and often acts as a mediator between consumers and carriers when disputes arise over rates or service. To submit a complaint click here. Please note that remedies available from the Utilities Commission do not include the award of monetary damages. Consumers who need additional information about how to pursue a complaint or plan a move can contact the Transportation Division for assistance. Useful information is also available on the Utilities Commission website about the Transportation Industry.
